Difference of M2M, IoT and CPS

Nowadays, the Internet of Things has become an important part of the new generation of information technology. In this information age, the Internet of Everything is an important stage. The Internet of Everything is the goal of everyone. There are still great differences in the understanding of the Internet of Things in various fields. There are even their own titles. There are three definitions that are more clear: "M2M", "IoT", "CPS", what are the differences between the three concepts?

1.M2M(machine to machine)

The concept of "M2M" is mainly proposed by the communications industry. Originally, M2M mainly refers to: mechanical devices that do not have information capabilities communicate with other devices or information systems (IT systems) through mobile communication networks (wireless networks).

The communication industry believes that after satisfying the communication needs between people, the network can also make the communication between "machine to machine" to form a more efficient information application. Since then, the concept of M2M has extended the concept of "man-to-machine" or "machine-to-human".

In general, M2M refers to people, equipment, information systems, and information exchange and interaction between the three.

The concept of M2M mainly emphasizes the realization of communication, and the network is at the core of its technical framework. Through the "wireless connection" technology, a reliable end-to-end connection is achieved. On the basis of the “connection” between things and objects, it realizes applications such as centralized asset monitoring, remote operation of equipment, logistics and warehousing management, and mobile payment.

2.IoT (Internet of things)

The IT industry believes that the concept of IoT can be traced back to the 1990 Xerox networked Coke Machine.

Then, in 1999, the Automatic Identification Center of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology proposed an Internet of Things concept based on RFID technology, and emphasized the concept of “information sensing device and Internet connection” in its definition. (The original RFID IoT definition: all items are connected to the Internet through information sensing devices such as radio frequency identification to realize intelligent identification and management.)

To this day, IoT is an Internet of Things concept that Internet companies, software companies, and the entire information industry push. After realizing the social interconnection between people, Internet companies hope that things can be communicated through the Internet. The foundation of IoT is still the Internet, which is the extension and development direction of the Internet.

The concept of IoT mainly emphasizes Internet interaction. The globalization, openness, interoperability and socialization of the Internet are the basis for supporting the IoT concept. Once a smart product has a "network identity," it can spawn a variety of Internet applications: product leasing (shared smart products), information services (such as location services, electronic payments, big data analytics), wearable product applications, and more.

3.CPS (Cyber Physical System)

In 2006, Helen Gill of the National Science Foundation proposed the concept of CPS and listed it as an important research project. Since CPS focuses on the research of embedded and automated information systems in industry and manufacturing, it was intuitively understood as “embedded Internet of Things” (from the perspective of the current information industry, this understanding is somewhat one-sided).

In the term "Cyber Physical System", "Cyber" refers to the information system, and "Physical" refers to the physical system (device, environment, data generated).

CPS emphasizes the real-time, dynamic information feedback and circulation process between the physical world and the information world.

It deeply integrates various information technologies: sensors, embedded computing, cloud computing, network communication, and software, enabling various information technologies (3C: Computing - Computer, Communication - CommunicaTIon and Control - Control) to be highly coordinated and autonomous. The production application system monitors and changes the traits of the physical world autonomously, intelligently, dynamically, and systematically.

The goal of CPS is to achieve deep integration between the information system and the physical world, as well as between various information systems: in perception, interconnection (standard communication, application protocol), capability opening (Internet service interface, API-application programming interface), Based on security controllable (identity authentication, secure encryption), application computing (data computing, information control), a huge, integrated and intelligent production service system is constructed.

CPS covers a wide range of applications: from tiny nano-robots to large engineering infrastructure, from urban traffic information to remote surgical systems, transportation, healthcare, agriculture, energy, defense, construction, and manufacturing pipelines. The area in which it is involved. For the time being, CPS is more focused on scientific research, while M2M and IoT are more focused on engineering technology.

Among the three concepts of “M2M”, “IoT” and “CPS”, CPS is designed to meet this characteristic.
